I always get the impression people cannot distinguish between Pro-choice fighting for access to abortion and WE WANT TO ABORT ALL THE BABIES!

Sometimes people are surprised when they accuse me of being "irresponsible" and I tell them I would not get an abortion. Though you want to know why? 1) My partner and I use birth control and condoms. Any sperm getting through that is a super baby. (okay that is more of a joke) 2) Although I am pathetically poor, my parents are wealthy. They would help raise the kid. 3) I plan on having a kid eventually anyway.

Though do those circumstances apply to everyone else? Fuck no. These are my circumstances and I am the best one to know them and decide.

Someone recently told me that unless a person is prepared, including being prepared financially, they should not have sex ever even if using contraceptives. Personally, I like not to think of engaging in sex with the person I love to be something I am privileged to do because my parents are wealthy. Seems shallow, though am I being selfish? =P

I hear you... But it just drives me nuts that there is an actual percentage out there that see it (abortion)as a form of birth control. I'm pro-choice as a general rule, but I can see what has the pro- lifers so enraged.

I hardly believe that. Abortion is stigmatized and expensive. Most women have to overcome financial shortcomings or procedural obstacles to get an abortion. Plus, I could imagine how it could be a physically tiring experience. Therefore I find it hard to believe that there is a noticeable percentage of women who use it as a means of birth control. I can believe that there are men and women who are irresponsible with sex but not that there are men or women who believe that abortion is a better alternative to condoms or the pill. That claim normally comes off as a radical pro-lifer attempt to demonize women by painting them as persons with no moral fiber.

Wow, aren't we generalizing. Here in Canada, they are easy enough to get. And yes, SOME people actually are irresponsible with sex. It does happen. if anything, that would be leading reason for abortion, rather than health or other extenuating circumstances. irresponsiblity. forgetting to buy condoms and thinking oh, it cant happen to me. Or taking antibiotics on the pill or whatever.

But im not here to debate the right or wrong of it. I'm just saying that, as a pro choicer I HAVE met women and their partners who have gotten abortions. Both were required as a result of irresponsibility. And both chose the abortion because they felt that a baby would interfere with their lifestyles. Well... Did finding a more responsible form of contraception cramp their style too? I'm not saying this to demonized women. I am one. in fact this has nothing to do with morality. I'm more ticked with the fact that society right now is so focused on instant gratification (I'm entitled to sex now!) that not everyone is honestly responsible about sex before they engage in it. That's all I'm saying. I'm sorry that I can empathize with some of the arguments that the pro-lifers have.

It always just sounds like that "there are people who literally believe that abortion is a better form of birth control to other forms such as condoms or pills." It is exactly the kind of woman pro-lifers seem to imagine on the left in the image above which I am making fun of.

I suppose what I am saying is that yes, pregnancy due to irresponsible actions do happen, but being pregnant due to being irresponsible (whatever that might include) is not a reason to say a person cannot get an abortion or is wrong to do so. Pro-choice really does not have exceptions on who can get an abortion and it doesn't matter if you or I approve. That is kinda the problem with Pro-Life in that most assume that their approval does matter when dealing with another person's private life.
Besides, in hindsight, it is always too easy to say that someone should have been more responsible. It may be true but that doesn't help a person who needs to make a choice about their pregnancy. I may hope that people who do make a mistake and believe that abortion is the best option for them would make better choices in the future but that doesn't really weigh in on my opinion that access to abortion should always be available. That weighs more into my opinion that we need more sex education and access to condoms and pill to prevent mistakes or deter irresponsible behavior.

Thank you! It's pro-CHOICE for a reason. If someone wants to keep the kid then cool, that's your thing. Personally, I don't think I will ever get an abortion myself. But if someone else wants one then that's cool, your choice.

Love this! As for the 'not prepared' thing - when people say "if you don't want children, don't have sex" I like to use a reply I once found on the net - "if you don't want food poisoning, don't eat food". Lol. xxx

haha, that is a good one.

Sometimes people say that we should never use condoms or birth control because sometimes they fail. I always liked the response, "We should take brakes out of cars because sometimes they fail."
